Boehringer Ingelheim’s once-daily Viramune receives EU approval

23rd September 2011

Boehringer Ingelheim has received European approval for its once-daily Viramune product for HIV treatment.

The prolonged-release tablet has been ratified by the European Commission in combination with other antiretroviral medications for the treatment for HIV-1, based on positive data from clinical trials that showcase its therapeutic benefits.

During these studies, once-daily Viramune was shown to offer non-inferior performance compared to older twice-daily immediate release therapies, while also demonstrating a strong safety and tolerability profile.

This latest approval comes after the drug was ratified in the US by the Food and Drug Administration earlier this year.

Professor Klaus Dugi, corporate senior vice-president for medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim, said: "Viramune prolonged-release tablets give patients a simplified treatment option without compromising on clinical efficacy and fits in with today's prescribing trends."

Earlier this week, the company announced the commencement of enrolment for a new study of an investigational combination therapy option for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800737921-ADNFCR
