BeCertain Raises £1.7m for Dental AI Diagnostics Tool

BeCertain, a spin-out from King’s College London and the University of Surrey, has raised £1.7 million (€2.0 million) in early-stage investment to advance its uncertainty-aware AI dental diagnostics platform. Announced on 28 July 2026, the round was led by Sure Valley Ventures and supported by Innovate UK’s Growth Catalyst programme. BeCertain’s software uses AI to detect dental disease on radiographs while indicating how reliable each finding is.

The BeCertain platform uses proprietary uncertainty-aware AI to identify caries, bone loss, infection and possible defects in existing restorations on 2D intra-oral radiographs. Unlike standard AI systems that only flag suspected findings, BeCertain provides calibrated confidence scores to help clinicians assess how reliable each result is, with data privacy built into the architecture. The technology was developed at King’s College London, led by Dr Yunpeng Li and Prof Owen Addison. BeCertain’s calibrated uncertainty output is positioned as its differentiator against dental AI systems from Dentsply Sirona, Pearl, Overjet and Diagnocat.

Dr Li, BeCertain’s CEO and co-founder, framed the core challenge in clinical AI as trust rather than detection, arguing clinicians need systems that communicate their confidence rather than issuing black-box verdicts. Prof Addison, co-founder and Chief Medical Officer, described the company as focused on giving clinicians consistency and freeing time for patient care through regulated AI. The £1.7 million round builds on a £1.75 million product development award previously received from the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research.

The commercial signal is a rapidly maturing dental AI diagnostics category where trust, regulatory readiness and workflow integration are becoming key competitive vectors. BeCertain’s UK university-backed positioning and NIHR track record differentiate it from US-based rivals. Expect Dentsply Sirona, Pearl and Overjet to sharpen their own confidence scoring and data privacy positioning as the category matures through 2026 and 2027.
