Tufts Study: Omega-3 Cuts Oral Inflammation Markers

Researchers at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine have found that high-dose prescription omega-3 fatty acid supplementation may lower markers of oral and systemic inflammation in patients with stable coronary artery disease. Published in the Journal of the American Dental Association in August 2026, the secondary analysis adds to a growing evidence base for nutritional adjuncts to periodontal care and to the established link between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease.

The study, led by Dr Bushra Ahmad (assistant professor of periodontics at Tufts), involved 240 patients with stable coronary artery disease undergoing statin therapy. Over 30 months, patients received either a high-dose prescription formulation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or no omega-3 supplementation, with gingival crevicular fluid collected from both maxillary quadrants for oral analysis and blood samples collected for systemic inflammatory markers. The omega-3 group had significantly lower levels of one oral inflammatory marker in the left quadrant, and a significantly lower neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (a systemic inflammation marker associated with cardiovascular outcomes). No comparable oral inflammation reduction was seen in the right quadrant.

 

Ahmad framed the findings as suggesting omega-3 fatty acids may have a potential role as an adjunct to established mechanical plaque control measures. The study contributes to broader Tufts work exploring the relationship between periodontitis and systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease and cognitive function. Other nutritional approaches recently investigated include a fasting-mimicking diet as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy and a plant-rich Mediterranean diet linked to reduced periodontal disease severity. Ahmad cautioned that findings should not be generalised to other patient populations or omega-3 supplements.

The commercial signal is a growing nutraceutical dentistry category taking shape at the intersection of oral health, cardiovascular disease and precision nutrition. Prescription EPA/DHA products increasingly extend from cardiovascular applications into adjunct oral care research. Expect Amarin (Vascepa), BASF, DSM-Firmenich, Nordic Naturals and other omega-3 specialists to explore dental adjunct positioning as the periodontitis-cardiovascular evidence base continues to strengthen.
