AstronauTx Wins MJFF and Parkinson’s UK Sleep Grants

UK biotech AstronauTx has received funding from The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) and Parkinson’s UK to advance sleep-based therapeutic approaches for Parkinson’s disease. Announced on 23 September 2026, the two parallel grant-funded projects will investigate whether AstronauTx compounds that enhance restorative sleep can reduce the accumulation of pathological proteins linked to Parkinson’s and slow disease progression, ahead of the company’s planned 2027 clinical entry.

The MJFF-funded project will assess whether novel AstronauTx compounds that boost restorative sleep can reduce the accumulation of pathological proteins associated with Parkinson’s, with a specific focus on REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder (RBD), an early indicator of Parkinson’s. The aim is to generate data supporting development of a disease-modifying treatment for the prodromal stage. Separately, the Parkinson’s UK-funded project with University College London will investigate whether increasing slow-wave sleep can enhance glymphatic flow (the brain’s waste-clearance system) and promote removal of alpha-synuclein, a neurotoxic protein associated with Parkinson’s.

Shalini Padmanabhan, Senior VP and Head of Translational Research at MJFF, positioned restorative sleep as an emerging area of interest for Parkinson’s therapeutic development. AstronauTx CEO Jane Rhodes framed the grant-funded work as directly supporting development of new disease-modifying approaches. The programmes contribute to AstronauTx’s sleep architecture-targeting pipeline, with lead programme clinical development planned for 2027. The strategy places AstronauTx in a differentiated position across Parkinson’s therapeutics, complementing alpha-synuclein-targeting approaches from Prothena, Roche/Genentech (prasinezumab) and Denali Therapeutics, while opening a novel entry point via sleep therapeutics traditionally dominated by Idorsia (Quviviq), Eisai (Dayvigo) and Merck (Belsomra).

The commercial signal is a growing convergence between sleep therapeutics and neurodegenerative disease markets, with sleep architecture emerging as a novel entry point for disease-modifying therapies. Prodromal Parkinson’s opportunity is substantial. Expect AbbVie (Prevail, Cerevel), Denali Therapeutics, Prothena, Roche/Genentech and traditional sleep therapeutics specialists Idorsia, Eisai and Merck to monitor sleep-neuro adjacencies as AstronauTx’s clinical programme progresses through 2027 and 2028.
