Acta Pharmaceuticals Raises $24m for GSM Alzheimer’s Drug

23rd October 2026

US biotech Acta Pharmaceuticals has secured $24 million in seed funding to advance its Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pipeline, including lead candidate GSM-779690T. Announced on 16 October 2026, the funding supports advancement into a Phase I clinical trial for a once-daily oral gamma-secretase modulator designed to prevent amyloid plaque formation rather than clear existing plaques, representing a differentiated mechanistic approach for early intervention and AD prevention.

Existing FDA-approved AD therapies either treat symptoms or clear amyloid beta (Aβ) after senile plaques accumulate (such as Eisai/Biogen’s Leqembi and Eli Lilly’s Kisunla). Gamma-secretase modulators alter protein production upstream, before plaques form: GSM-779690T lowers plaque-forming Aβ42 while boosting shorter peptides Aβ37 and Aβ38, which impede plaque build-up. Unlike earlier gamma-secretase inhibitors (which previously failed in trials from Eli Lilly’s semagacestat and Bristol Myers Squibb’s avagacestat), modulators preserve normal biological functions. The planned Phase I trial, expected October 2026, is placebo-controlled, randomised and double-blind, assessing single and multiple ascending doses in healthy adults.

Acta Pharmaceuticals co-founder and CEO George Alex positioned the funding as translating four decades of Dr Rudolph Tanzi’s discoveries into new Alzheimer’s treatments, with GSM-779690T representing 25 years of research at Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of California San Diego, supported by approximately $70 million in preclinical development funding. Acta is also progressing a combination therapies programme leveraging the “Alzheimer’s-in-a-Dish” human brain cell models which simulate disease features to screen hundreds of compounds simultaneously within six weeks. Backers include Gamma Bio Investors, Dolby Family Ventures and the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Foundation.

The commercial signal is a differentiated Alzheimer’s therapeutic approach positioned ahead of plaque formation rather than clearance, representing a potentially substantial strategic hedge against first-generation anti-amyloid franchises. Early intervention and prevention open substantial new commercial territory. Expect Eisai/Biogen (Leqembi), Eli Lilly (Kisunla), Roche (gantenerumab legacy) and other neurodegenerative specialists to monitor GSM developments across the broader AD pipeline through 2027 and 2028.
