FDA Grants Teleflex Freesolve Breakthrough Device Status
Teleflex has received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for Freesolve, its resorbable magnesium scaffold (RMS) for percutaneous coronary intervention. Announced on 23 October 2026, the designation accelerates US regulatory review for a device already CE-marked and commercialised across Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and South America, intensifying competitive pressure across the US interventional cardiology coronary scaffold category and reinforcing bioresorbable technology as a strategic growth lever.
Freesolve uses BIOmag magnesium alloy and BIOlute bioabsorbable coating technology to support the vessel during and after implantation, with the body resorbing approximately 99% of the magnesium over 12 months. The device is positioned as an alternative to drug-coated balloons that limits the need for permanent implants. BIOMAG-I first-in-human data showed 3.5% target lesion failure at four years with no new clinical events reported between years two and four. The ongoing BIOMAG-III Pivotal Trial is intended to support a future PMA application. Jason Fontana, Teleflex President and Interventional General Manager, positioned the designation as a milestone toward bringing Freesolve RMS to US patients.
The designation follows a 2024 FDA breakthrough designation granted to the Freesolve below-the-knee scaffold for chronic limb-threatening ischaemia, extending Teleflex’s bioresorbable platform across coronary and peripheral vascular applications. The FDA pathway sharpens Teleflex’s US competitive positioning across the coronary scaffold and interventional cardiology market, which remains dominated by drug-eluting stent incumbents Abbott (Xience), Boston Scientific (Synergy, Agent drug-coated balloon), Medtronic (Resolute Onyx) and Terumo (Ultimaster). Direct bioresorbable scaffold competition is limited following Abbott’s 2017 Absorb withdrawal, with Elixir Medical (DynamX bioadaptor) and MicroPort (Firesorb) also advancing resorbable technology.
The commercial signal is a reviving bioresorbable coronary scaffold category where magnesium-based resorbable platforms challenge both conventional drug-eluting stents and emerging drug-coated balloon alternatives. BIOMAG-I four-year data has reset safety confidence following historical bioresorbable scaffold setbacks. Expect Teleflex, Abbott, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Terumo, Biotronik, Elixir Medical and MicroPort to sharpen their US interventional cardiology positioning through 2027 and 2028.
