Charles River Deploys Virtual Control Groups in Ipsen GLP Study
Charles River Laboratories is applying its Virtual Control Group (VCG) methodology in a GLP-compliant toxicology study for Ipsen, marking a notable step forward for AI-driven alternatives to concurrent control animal cohorts. Reported on 27 October 2026, the collaboration signals growing regulatory and industry appetite for VCGs within formal GLP preclinical workflows, extending Charles River’s leading position in alternative methods and sharpening competitive dynamics across the global contract research organisation market.
Virtual Control Groups apply historical control data, advanced statistics and AI-enabled analytics to digitally replace a portion of the concurrent control animals in regulated safety studies. The Ipsen GLP study extends VCG use beyond the earlier non-GLP studies that have anchored its scientific validation, including Charles River’s April 2026 retrospective analysis published in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology covering 20 toxicology studies. That retrospective reported 100% concordance in No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) across studies, with up to 25% reduction in control group animal use where scientifically appropriate. Financial terms of the Ipsen collaboration were not disclosed, and Charles River has not quantified expected animal use reduction or further GLP deployments.
The partnership sits within Charles River’s broader Alternative Methods Advancement Project (AMAP) and its participation in the VICT3R Project, a public-private consortium funded by the Innovative Health Initiative that is building a global database and frameworks for VCG adoption. Regulatory acceptance is advancing: the European Medicines Agency has issued a recent draft qualification for VCGs replacing concurrent controls in non-GLP rat dose-range finding studies, which Charles River positions as an important step toward broader regulatory adoption. Separate from this initiative, Charles River, Labcorp and the US FDA announced a research agreement on 22 October to develop standardised methods for assessing drug abuse potential. The Ipsen GLP study represents strategic validation for VCG commercial scaling rather than a proven revenue line, with key commercial questions centring on how quickly big pharma clients follow Ipsen into GLP-grade VCG deployment.
The commercial signal is a maturing preclinical alternative methods category where AI-enabled virtual control groups are moving from scientific validation into formal GLP deployment, with substantial implications for CRO service economics, pharma animal welfare commitments and regulatory precedent. Further GLP study rollouts are the key commercial scaling milestone. Expect sustained investment in AI-driven preclinical alternatives and continued regulatory engagement across the 3Rs agenda through 2027 and 2028.
