Candidates – be more selective!

10th February 2014

We see a lot of candidates who scattergun their CV out to lots of different recruitment agencies when looking for a new role, but you may want to consider an alternative approach. It is increasingly an employee’s market, and with this in mind you can afford to be a little more selective both about the role you want next, and who you choose to help you find this role.

Recruiters will always want to help find the best role for you, but by sharing your CV with lots of agencies and recruiters you are positioning yourself as more of a commodity, than a prized possession. You may also find that by handing your CV out to lots of agencies, you end up unknowingly entering yourself for the same role more than once; which doesn’t look good to potential employees.

So what criteria should you look for in choosing a recruitment partner?

Firstly, make sure they are reputable. It is important to make sure you choose an honest, reliable agency to help you in your quest for a new role as some agencies are well known for offering your CV without even asking your permission. This is something you want to avoid at all costs, as it doesn’t allow you to understand the job role or the organisation before you are thrust into interview mode.

It is also key to select a sector specific agency with knowledge of the industry as they will be in constant contact with the top organisations in the sector and will know when and why companies are looking for new candidates. They will also be able to provide you with the help and advice you need to guide you through the process and will be able to place you in the position and the organisation that best suits your unique criteria.

Another thing to look for is a good reputation. You want to make sure you are choosing an agency that is well known in the market and has a long standing reputation in the industry. And take a look at recommendations; if they have good testimonials from relevant companies and candidates, then the chances are they will know your market at least as well as you do.

So next time you think about firing your CV out to lots of different agencies, take a step back, think about the end outcome and be selective.
