Making the Best Impression at an Interview

17th August 2017

Your CV has sparked a hirer’s interest and they have contacted you or your recruitment agency to arrange an interview. You have inside knowledge that there is stiff competition with other candidates, but you know that you are perfect for the job. Some interviewers will make their mind up within the first 30 seconds of meeting a candidates on whether they would hire someone, so first impressions right at the very beginning could determine the outcome. With a few simple know how’s, here is how you can make a lasting impression and stand out from the crowd:
Dress Appropriately
If you are not sure what to wear to an interview, the moto is to make sure you’re dressed professionally. A candidate dressed in a suit is more than likely going to make a much better impression than someone dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. A suit and shirt combo with smart shoes is a safe option to go for.
Be Positive
Try and be as positive as you can. Hirers want to know why you think that you are a good fit for their company. Upon meeting your interviewers, have a good firm handshake with good eye contact and don’t forget to smile, as this will help to build your confidence. There are times when negative answers are unavoidable. Adding a positive spin onto this will go a long way.
Be yourself
If hiring panels don’t feel that they can work with you then this will impact the likelihood of you being offered the job. It is important to ensure that you are yourself and that you don’t try to make yourself fit the role or the company culture.
Show your enthusiasm
It is ok for you to show your passion for the role or the topic in hand. This will show the interviewer that you love your work and that you’re excited about the opportunities that would be available for you at their company.
Back up with Facts
Try and be specific and show the interviewers how you are the right person for the job. Sharing scenarios or stories from your working and daily life to back up your statements gives you an opportunity to show off your story telling skills and engage the interviewer.
Pave the Way
When answering questions try and fill your answers with snippets of information that can prompt the interviewer to ask you to expand more. This isn’t essential and can’t looked to forced but if you find it naturally steering that way then take the opportunity and go with it.
Work around your weaknesses
Remember you are human and you will have something that you need to work on. If you’re faced with the question in an interview, the trick in answering this to let the interviewer know that you have weaknesses but to highlight how you have addressed them or how you would like to address them.
