Of course you should! Almost any position can now be filled on a temporary basis which is great for companies that need to be flexible during product development or swings in the marketplace. Reasons for hiring temporary staff may also include maternity cover and seasonal demands and it’s these short-term covers that will benefit from a temporary worker jumping on board.
For countless organisations, there are many benefits to using temporary staff and despite the bad reputation temp workers may have – somewhat unfairly – they can prove to be a great asset if you have the right company culture and mind-set.
So why should you hire a temp and what will they bring to your workplace?
A tailor-made service
Some projects may require a person with experience that you just don’t have in house. A temporary employee with relevant experience therefore will take a lot less time coming up to scratch on the project rather than putting an existing employee through days of training. And let’s not mention the cost of doing so. A temporary worker in this case provides a tailor-made service when you need it.
No strings attached
If you’re not sure if an extra body in the workplace is entirely necessary or right for the business, hiring a temp to fill the position first will answer your question. You’ll have time to evaluate the character fit of the individual within your existing team and / or evaluate whether the workload really is enough to justify an addition to the payroll. At the same time, the individual will have the benefit of understanding what the position is really all about whilst gaining a full sense of the company’s culture.
A fresh perspective
How many times have you heard a new employee- temp or perm- say, “well at my previous job we did…”? New talent brings fresh ideas into the workplace and may just be the spark of inspiration your team needs.
There is an army of temps out there today who are super-skilled with advanced knowledge and a strong work ethic. So should you hire a temp? Whatever you do – don’t discount the option!
