Top tips on how to progress your career

9th February 2018

Achieving your goals will not be an overnight job, but if you are looking at moving up and progressing our career to the next level, here are some top tips to help you get there:

Take the rough with the smooth

Good or bad, it is essential to take responsibility for you actions at work. Good actions will highlight your successes and accomplishments with Management, but admitting when something has gone wrong and showing how you have tried to resolve this yourself before asking for help will show off your professional manner and maturity. Taking responsibility for both the good and the bad, shows your commitment and willing and puts you in a good position to be offered a promotion internally.

Push yourself

There is normally strong competition for higher positions both internally and when looking outside your organisation, so you need to make sure you don’t get overlooked. If you’re looking for an internal promotion, use every opportunity to show your enthusiasm, and commitment to the company and your job. This can be shown simply by offering to help with cover work for a colleague who is on long term sick, working outside your regular hours – either to help with a project or get through a busy period, all will help you to shine through above others.

This willingness is also a great way to promote yourself at an interview stage if you are seeking new employment, as it shows your flexibility and willingness to be a team player, a quality that many employers look for in an employee.

Respect your colleagues

Playing games, blaming others for your mistakes and gossiping in order to try and get promotion never ends well. You simply come off as someone who only cares about themselves rather than the team, and this could hinder your chances of moving up the ranks, or securing a new role. Keep your conscience clear and show your genuine skills and suitability for the job.

If you don’t ask, you don’t get

Your goals and achievement will never be fulfilled if these are not shared with your employer. By speaking to your boss and asking about what type of career opportunities are available and ways in which you can progress whilst at the company. If the opportunities available are not what you are looking for then you can start to seek them elsewhere, and if they are, you and your boss can then start to look at getting plan together to help you achieved these goals and move upwards.

Don’t settle

Circumstances and situations change and with that your goals and aspirations may also change. This can happen at any time within your working life, so it is important to make sure you don’t settle. If the opportunities aren’t there for you to move forward, or step back, then don’t be afraid to look elsewhere. The worst thing would be to stay in a position in hope that it might progress into something else one day.
