Why is shadowing experience important for graduates?
It is becoming an increasingly difficult task for graduates to break into the devices market, so it is important to go to interview armed with as much industry knowledge and information that will help position yourself above your competition as far as possible.
Shadowing a medical devices rep (for at least 1 day) is the first advice I would give anyone looking to get into a sales role with a medical company. Although it is not always easy, there are massive advantages:
1. Doing this will mean that you get to see what it is like ‘day to day’ for a sales rep, so you can give an accurate account at interview of what your responsibilities will be. It is important that you paint a realistic picture, not a glamorised one.
2. You will be able to use the knowledge and experience gained to sell yourself based on your understating of the NHS environment. The NHS is a constantly changing environment so a candidate that can demonstrate a good understanding of how to sell to different departments and what it takes to secure a deal will stand out at interview.
3. It shows commitment. Organising a shadowing day is not that easy, in doing so will prove to clients that you have an active interest in moving into a devices role and that you are fully committed to this industry; something which is vital in order to get a role.
