?0.5m raid on illegal Tamiflu

17th January 2006

Officers from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) carried out a raid last week finding ?500,000 worth of illegally imported Tamiflu.

The raid in London uncovered 5,000 packets of the drug, which were being sold on the internet.

An MHRA spokeswoman told AFP: “We believe it’s genuine Tamiflu and we’re in the middle of testing it. It’s looking more like a stolen consignment and illegally imported without a licence to be distributed without a licence.
“That’s what we would be directing our solicitors towards in any forthcoming prosecution.”

The spread of avian flu into Turkey and increased public concern about the H5N1 virus are thought to have lead to the trade in Tamiflu.

MHRA is now investigating several websites in Britain that claim to be selling Roche’s Tamiflu.

The Sunday Times uncovered one such firm in Manchester that was selling cheap antiviral drugs as Tamiflu with a 1,500 per cent mark up.
