£1m bill daily’

5th October 2009

New data shows that the NHS in Wales is being hit with a bill for £1 million every day due to conditions developed by smokers, the BBC reports.

Furthermore, if this continues, the 6,000 people who die annually in Wales due to smoking is set to rise, the paper stated.

According to the report, which was commissioned by Ash Wales and the British Heart Foundation Cymru, treating smoking-related diseases cost the organisation around £386 million between 2007 and 2008.

“We urge the Welsh Assembly Government to act now and implement a comprehensive, and fully funded, tobacco control strategy for Wales, in line with other parts of the UK,” the news provider quotes Tanya Buchanan of Ash Wales as saying.

This report comes after figures released by the NHS last week showed that one in 20 hospital admissions among the 35-plus age group in the UK are due to conditions caused by smoking.
