80% of Dental Clinics in England Refuse NHS Treatment to New Patients

19th December 2023

Recent findings reveal that four out of five dental clinics in England are not accepting new NHS patients.

The clear indication of severe challenges when seeking dental care comes alongside a caution from medical specialists that “universal dental care has likely become a thing of the past.”

Just over 70% of dental clinics are declining under-18’s for NHS treatment, and this increases to 82% for those aged over 18.

Victoria Atkins, the health and social care minister, stated that “NHS dentistry should be accessible and available for all those who need it.” However, the British Dentistry Association criticized her, claiming that she failed to present any steps to accomplish that objective.

The Nuffield Trust health thinktank cautions that “NHS dentistry is at its most perilous point in its 75-year history.”
