A third of UK women ‘have had no health screenings’

27th January 2012

Almost a third of women in the UK have never undergone health screenings of any description, according to a new survey conducted by Bupa.

The international healthcare group has conducted a poll showing that 29 percent of women have never been checked out for diseases such as cervical cancer, due to a lack of information on what it involves, as well as anxiety about abnormal results.

This is despite the fact that many cancers are far more preventable if they are picked up early during screenings, with deaths from cervical cancer having fallen over the last 25 years for this reason.

Dr Katrina Herren, medical director for Bupa Health and Wellbeing, said: "Early detection of pre-cancerous cells is vitally important in preventing cervical cancer so if your test does detect these abnormal cells, don't panic."

According to data from Cancer Research UK, ten-year survival rates for cervical cancer have been increasing steadily since the 1970s.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801277025-ADNFCR
