Abbott and Velcera partner to supply canine pain medication

20th August 2009

Abbott has entered into a partnership with Velcera which will see the firms manufacture the first canine pain management product delivered in a transmucosal mist form.

The product has been licenced globally for the treatment of pain in dogs. It is currently undergoing clinical trials and features the pain medication meloxicam, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and Velcera’s patented Promist technology.

It is administered to the animal through an oral cavity or the inside of the cheek in a fine mist and is absorbed quickly through the mouth’s mucous membranes.

Dennis Steadman, chief executive of Velcera, said: “Being able to partner with a trusted company like Abbott on a product of this nature is a testament to the importance of this technology.”

Abbott recently announced that its post-approval study for XIENCE V will continue for longer than originally planned so more participants can sign up for the trials.
