Abbott launches new blood glucose test strips in Europe

18th May 2010

Abbott has released the latest versions of its FreeStyle and FreeStyle Lite blood glucose test strips in Europe, which are designed to be easier to use and more accurate than previous versions.

The new strips are designed to function with all existing FreeStyle blood glucose monitoring systems and feature a low blood sample size, a ZipWik tapered design and virtually pain-free application.

Because the new products use the GDH-FAD enzyme rather than the GDH-PQQ enzyme for testing, results are not affected by common non-glucose sugars such as maltose and galactose, reducing the chance of errors.

The company states that its new FreeStyle line will also help to minimise the frequency of error messages and wasted test strips.

Heather Mason, senior vice-president of Abbott Diabetes Care, said: “Abbott is delivering on what patients and health care professionals demand in diabetes care, especially for people who use insulin to manage their diabetes.”

Earlier this month, Abbott reported results from a new clinical trial of its new Xience V everolimus-eluting coronary stent, which demonstrated its advantages over the alternative Taxus Express2 paclitaxel-eluting stent.
