22nd March 2010

Abbott has inaugurated a new medical education and information programme in Vietnam in order to promote better healthcare standards in the country.

The company’s philanthropic arm the Abbott Fund has allied with a number of healthcare industry bodies to launch the Abbott Fund Institute of Nutrition Science (AFINS) at Bach Mai Hospital.

This venture will aim to provide health education, clinical research and nutritional patient care with the aim of enhancing the nation’s standard of clinical nutrition.

AFINS represents a long-term project for Abbott and its partners, with the pharmaceutical company having donated $1 million (666,000 pounds) to support the scheme thus far.

Catherine Babington, president of the Abbott Fund, said: “By combining Abbott Fund support and the expertise of Abbott scientists with our distinguished partners’ expertise, we are strengthening the capacity to meet the nutrition needs of hospital patients across Vietnam.”

Last week, the company submitted a supplemental new drug application to the Food and Drug Administration for an additional formulation of prostate cancer drug Lupron Depot.
