Abbott stands with Magic on HIV/Aids programme

1st May 2008

Pharmaceutical manufacturer Abbott has joined basketball legend Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson’s I Stand With Magic campaign to end HIV/Aids among African Americans.

The company joined the former NBA star – who was diagnosed HIV positive in 1992 – to take the campaign to the US capital, Washington DC, where 81 per cent of new HIV cases reported in 2006 were African American residents.

Across the country as a whole, African Americans – who represent around 13 per cent of the total population – account for approximately half of all new HIV infections.

The I Stand With Magic campaign focuses on encouraging African American and other ethnic minority groups to seek out community resources, get educated and get tested for HIV. It also urges those diagnosed with the virus to seek treatment.

Mr Johnson said that getting tested is the “first step” to controlling new infections, as some people may be unknowingly spreading the virus because they do not know they have it.

“We need to take it upon ourselves to bring the number of new infections down by arming ourselves with knowledge,” he added.

Abbott is a global healthcare manufacturer whose products include pharmaceutical therapies, lab diagnostics and medical devices.
