Abbott technology highlighted for its innovation

4th December 2009

Abbott’s technology Ibis has been named by Science magazine as one of the most innovative products of 2009.

According to the publication, the technology – which is designed to detect and characterise microorganisms and is marketed under PLEX ID – was highlighted for its ability to pick up on viruses, bacteria and fungi.

It also yields test results in six to seven hours, rather than the three or more days usually required by existing culturing methods.

Edward Michael, executive vice-president of diagnostics at Abbott, stated: “Science is the foundation for everything we do at Abbott and we’re proud to be honored for the distinguished work that our scientists and engineers do.”

The technology has also been named overall gold winner of the 2009 Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards.

Last month, Abbott revealed that it plans to develop a new heart failure detection test on the Architect Immunochemistry Diagnostics Platform using a product from the firm BG Medicine.
