Abbott wins Chicago Innovation Award

23rd October 2007

Abbott has announced that it has been recognised with the Chicago Innovation Award for 2007 – it’s third such honour in five years – with the company picking up the accolade for its RealTime HIV-1 viral load test and m2000 molecular diagnostic instrument.

The RealTime HIV-1 viral load test can detect group M, N and O strains of HIV-1, in addition to non-B subtypes of the virus, offering speedy and accurate test methods.

In combination with the HIV-assay and software developed by the firm, the m2000 facilitates the automatic and rapid measurement of minuscule levels of virus in patient samples, with results available within hours.

Miles D White, chairman and chief executive officer at Abbott, said: ” At Abbott we’re in the business of improving lives – often saving lives.

“That’s an important motivation in fostering innovation. Patients depend on us for new and better medicines, diagnostics and nutritionals, and that inspires our scientists everyday”

He added that the HIV-1 viral load test and m2000, together with past Chicago Innovation Award winners PathVysion and Humira are merely a selection of the examples of the quality of work being undertaken at the company.

In August 2007, Abbott reported the role of its HIV-1 viral load test in allaying some of the difficulties involved in obtaining blood samples from patients.
