Abbott’s CardioMEMS HF System shows benefits in reducing cost of care
Abbott has announced the findings of a new study that demonstrate the practical benefits offered by its CardioMEMS HF monitoring system.
The latest research includes more than 1,100 Medicare patients in the US and indicated that the CardioMEMS HF System can be an effective real-world approach to reduce heart failure hospitalisations and combat the rising cost of heart failure.
A 46 percent reduction in heart failure hospitalisations was observed in patients six months after receiving the CardioMEMS HF System, with a 34 percent reduction at 12 months post-implant.
The findings are consistent with the results of the CHAMPION clinical trial, underlining the benefits offered by the system's ability to help physicians adjust medications based on the patient's pulmonary artery pressures.
Additionally, in the six months post-implant, each patient experienced an average reduction of more than $10,500 (8,400 pounds) in comprehensive healthcare costs compared to the six months prior to implant.
Dr Philip Adamson, medical director of Abbott's heart failure business, said: "The reduction in hospitalisations and costs associated with heart failure confirmed by this data shows that proactive patient management with the CardioMEMS HF System is successful in mainstream practice and results in improved clinical outcomes."
