Abbott’s Freestyle Libre system approved for NHS reimbursement
Abbott has announced that its FreeStyle Libre flash glucose monitoring system has been approved for NHS reimbursement in the UK.
The NHS Business Services Authority has approved the system for people with diabetes using insulin, meaning that it will be available to patients in all four countries of the UK from November 2017 onwards.
FreeStyle Libre is designed to help people with diabetes measure their glucose levels by automatically reading glucose levels through a sensor that is approximately the size of a coin. It is worn on the upper arm for up to 14 days, eliminating the need for calibration and routine finger sticks.
In two published clinical trials and real-world studies involving more than 50,000 users, patients using FreeStyle Libre scan their glucose levels an average of 15 times per day, with this level of frequency ensuring that users spend less time in hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia.
Neil Harris, general manager of Abbott's UK diabetes care business, said: "We are delighted with the NHS decision, and we look forward to partnering with them to provide people with diabetes our innovative technology to help manage their condition."
