Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre system shows glucose monitoring benefits

23rd February 2017

Abbott has reported new data from a real-world study that underlines the glucose monitoring benefits of its FreeStyle Libre system.

The data set, presented at the Advanced Technologies and Treatment for Diabetes congress, was generated from 50,831 readers, which were used to scan 279,446 sensors. This constituted 409.4 million glucose measurements from more than 50,000 FreeStyle Libre users across Europe.

It was shown that people who scanned more frequently using FreeStyle Libre spend less time experiencing hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia, while having improved average glucose levels.

Users of the system checked their glucose levels an average of 16 times per day, which is three times more than the minimum recommended US and European guidelines for testing with the traditional fingerstick technique.

Jared Watkin, senior vice-president for diabetes care at Abbott, said: "FreeStyle Libre is changing how diabetes has been managed for decades, with one simple swipe. Most importantly, we're doing that by empowering patients with the information that they need to take action."
