Abbott’s Freestyle Navigator CGMS gets distribution deal

23rd April 2008

Abbott’s Freestyle Navigator Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (GCMS) will be promoted and distributed by insulin technology manufacturer Smiths Medical MD, it has been announced.

Under the non-exclusive distribution agreement, Smiths Medical will promote the prescription-only Freestyle Navigator system, which is designed to constantly record levels of interstitial fluid glucose as a way of improving diabetes control.

The system comprises three elements – a sensor worn just under the skin, a transmitter and a receiver. The sensor measure glucose levels once a minute and the data is wirelessly transferred to the pager-sized receiver unit. Using pre-determined levels agreed between doctor and patient, the system can issue alerts if glucose levels become too high or too low.

Jim Stitt, managing director of Smiths Medical – which also manufacturers the CozMore insulin technology system and Deltec Cozmo insulin pump – said the Freestyle Navigator CGMS represents “cutting edge technology”.

“And when you use it in conjunction with the unique features of the CozMore insulin technology system, you have one of the most complete, state-of-the-art ways to manage diabetes,” he added.

Chip Hance, senior vice president of Abbot Diabetes Care, commented that the deal would complement his own firm’s efforts to bring the technology to diabetes patients.

According to the World Health Organisation, around 171 million people worldwide have diabetes.
