ABPI launches industry-backed carbon footprint tool

23rd August 2013

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry has allied with the Carbon Trust to launch a spreadsheet-based tool to help calculate the carbon footprint of pharmaceutical products.

Developed with funding support from AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, Janssen, Lilly and Pfizer, the tool is the first of its kind for the pharmaceutical sector and can help UK firms estimate the carbon footprint of tablet medicines in blister packs quickly and easily.

Data incorporated into the model accounts for carbon emissions for active pharmaceutical ingredients, transport and distribution, formulation and packaging, retail and use phase and disposal of the packaging.

ABPI chief executive Stephen Whitehead said: "The development of this tool forms part of the ABPI's commitment to help its members to identify carbon hotspots for products and areas for potential carbon footprint reduction."

This comes after the industry body launched a new clinical trial disclosure toolkit to help improve scientific transparency standards among UK drugmakers earlier this month.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801628910-ADNFCR
