Actelion’s co-head of drug discovery hands over his role

Actelion’s co-founder and senior vice-president Walter Fischli is handing over his position as co-head of drug discovery to Beat Steiner.

The former has worked in the position for more than ten years but now wants to concentrate on advancing scientific relationships to give the company access to essential scientific approaches and innovative technologies.

Jean-Paul Clozel, managing director and chief executive officer, remarked Mr Fischli’s contribution to the company’s success to date had gone beyond his excellent drug discovery leadership role.

He commented: “In his new role, hunting for the ideas and innovators of tomorrow, he will continue to be a crucial element to the advancement of innovation at Actelion.”

Mr Steiner, who will take on the role of co-head of drug discovery from mid-2009, joined the team in 2003 as deputy head of pharmacology and preclinical development.

Since joining the business, he has played a role in the selection of several clinical candidates such as the selective S1P1 receptor agonist.

The biopharmaceutical company’s headquarters are in Basel, Switzerland.
