Additional clinical pharmacists to be hired to support GP services
NHS England has allocated additional funding to support the hiring of more than 160 extra surgery-based clinical pharmacists.
In addition to previously-announced efforts, this initiative will increase the number of clinical pharmacists working in general practice from around 580 to more than 1,100 pharmacists across over 3,200 GP practices, which comprises around 40 percent of surgeries in the country.
It is expected that the move will benefit a population of nearly 34 million patients by providing them with expert medication advice and treatment, with staff conducting consultations with patients directly and helping them cope with their long-term conditions.
Overall, the hiring of clinical pharmacists by GP surgeries has been shown to provide quicker access to clinical advice for patients, while also freeing up GPs to spend more time attending to those with the greatest needs.
Dr Arvind Madan, NHS England's director of primary care, said: "Clinical pharmacists have a wealth of knowledge and skills to offer great patient care, in a more convenient way and are also taking some of the pressure off GPs, particularly at this time of year when we know demand is even greater than usual."
