Alcon reports second-quarter sales rise

24th July 2008

Alcon has announced its financial figures for the second quarter of the 2008 fiscal year, with the company reporting a 17.9 per cent rise in sales to $1,735.2 million (869.3 million pounds).

Net earnings for the quarter rose 26.3 per cent on the comparable period last year to $566.4 million, equal to $1.88 per share on a diluted basis, up from $448.4 million or $1.48 recorded in the second quarter of last year.

Pharmaceutical sales grew by 17.6 per cent during the quarter, with glaucoma product revenues increasing by 26.9 per cent on the back of the Azopt ophthalmic suspension and the Travatan family and DuoTrav ophthalmic solutions.

Cary Rayment, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Alcon, said: “The results for the second quarter demonstrate the benefits of our global operations that experienced strong growth in our core product lines and solid sales performance around the world.”

He added revenues in emerging and developed countries outside the US were strong, with its glaucoma franchise delivering robust sales growth.

Earlier this month, Novartis completed the purchase of a 25 stake in Alcon from Nestle, the first step in a planned majority takeover of the eye care firm.
