Allergan files action to share Botox information with medical communities

2nd October 2009

Allergan is contesting a ruling that forbids it from sharing relevant information that would assist physicians in evaluating the risks and benefits of Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) for various off-label therapeutic uses.

The firm is arguing that it is the duty of pharmaceutical firms to relate medically-accepted off-label uses of the product to healthcare professionals

Current laws state that treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration are for specific uses, but they may be prescribed by physicians for other purposes, subject to their professional judgement.

Douglas Ingram, Allergan’s executive vice-president, chief administrative officer and secretary, said: “After careful consideration, Allergan filed this lawsuit to enable it to communicate fully with the medical community on off-label, therapeutic uses of Botox to treat patients suffering from serious, debilitating conditions.”

In other news, Allergan revealed this week that it has entered into a partnership with Quintiles which will see the companies collaborate to promote Sanctura XR (trospium chloride extended release capsules).
