Amgen looks to Cork

Amgen, the biopharmaceutical firm, is in discussion with Irish authorities about investing ?1.3 billion in Cork.

The company is looking expand with a new base and in the race for the investment and hundreds of jobs along with Cork are Switzerland and Singapore.

Amgen and IDA Ireland, the Irish Development Agency, are in talks about a site in Carrigtwohill, in East Cork, and the company has already carried out an examination of the site, but nothing is certain.

Amgen spokeswoman Mary Klem told the Irish Examiner: “Over the past two years, Amgen has evaluated a number of potential global locations, including Ireland, Switzerland and Singapore, to establish a manufacturing plant.

“Discussions are taking place between Amgen and IDA Ireland regarding a potential Irish location. If a decision is made by Amgen to locate in Ireland, a full announcement will be made.”

However, sources have told the Irish Times that the decision is likely to go Cork’s way, although the thumbs up is needed from the Amgen board.
