Animal health sector welcomes launch of bluetongue vaccine products

19th July 2016

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has responded positively to the news that a bluetongue (BTV-8) vaccine has been launched in the UK by two pharmaceutical retailers.

Zoetis has already made its Zulvac 8 Bovis and Ovis vaccines available, with MSD Animal Health set to deliver Bluevac BTV8, a single vaccine for both sheep and cattle, in the coming days.

The BVA previously joined the British Cattle Veterinary Association, Goat Veterinary Society and Sheep Veterinary Society in welcoming the launch of the BTV-8 vaccine, which will help farmers and smallholders to manage the risk of a bluetongue outbreak predicted to reach the UK mainland by late summer.

Based on the high risk the disease poses, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has been working with veterinary associations, farmers' representatives and manufacturers to ensure the vaccine is available to meet demand, particularly in the south of England, where the risk is highest.

BVA president Sean Wensley said: "We recommend farmers speak to their local vet about the benefits of vaccination, taking into account their locality and individual circumstances. Farmers should not hesitate to seek advice if they have any concerns about their livestock."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801822037-ADNFCR
