Applied Biosystems sequences entire human genome

8th May 2009

Applied Biosystems has achieved a scientific first by being the only company in the world to have sequenced an entire human genome.

The biotechnology company – a division of Life Technologies Corporation – said that its research and development scientists had managed to sequence the whole genome in a single run at 17-fold coverage using the SOLiD 3 System.

According to Applied Biosystems, the breakthrough will enable scientists to create a catalogue of single nucleotide polymorphisms and structural variants that will help them to better understand the molecular events that cause cancer.

Richard Gibbs PhD, director of the Human Genome Sequencing Centre at Baylor College of Medicine, said: "The prospect of a single instrument run deciphering an entire human genome was unimaginable a few years ago, and now it’s a reality."?

Those looking for science sales jobs may like to know that Life Technologies Corporation recently pledged its technological resources to health officials across the globe to help in the identification of H1N1.
