Astellas appoints new oncology leader

15th August 2013

Astellas has named Dr Claire Thom as its new senior vice-president for global oncology development.

Dr Thom joins the company from Millennium, the oncology-focused Takeda subsidiary, where she served as senior vice-president for portfolio management, drug development management and strategic business operations.

She brings more than 24 years of pharmaceutical industry experience to her new role, spanning a wide range of functional areas including drug development, new product planning and marketing.

In her position at Astellas, she will report to chief medical officer Dr Sef Kurstjens and will succeed the recently-retired Dr Wayne Klohs.

Dr Kurstjens said: We believe that her unique background and varied experience, along with her approach to leadership and management, will support our mission to become a global category leader in oncology.

This comes after the company announced the launch of its new EU-approved prostate cancer therapy Xtandi in the UK last month, with the drug being made available in England via the Cancer Drugs Fund.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801625326-ADNFCR
