Astellas Pharma establishes new liaison office

5th November 2007

Astellas Pharma has announced the establishment of a new liaison office based in Mumbai, India.

The role of this office is to collect and assess product development and marketing strategy information with a view to a possible future entry into the market in India.

Astellas notes that the population in India is in the region of 1.1 billion, while the economy of the country has displayed almost ten per cent growth every year, with further evolution expected over time.

The company currently has operations in Europe and the US, in addition to other locations worldwide, including six existing subsidiaries in Asia, with the goal of further business expansion in Asia with the establishment of this office.

“The pharmaceutical market in India is approximately $6.2 billion [2.99 billion pounds], mainly with infectious diseases supplies, which is the fourth-largest pharmaceutical market within Asia after Japan, China and Korea,” Astellas reports.

The firm adds that the Indian market is expected to expand further following the systemisation of the intellectual property rights in the country following the establishment of the product patent regime in 2005.

Earlier this year, Astellas Pharma announced plans to restructure a number of business units within its European operations, including its development, sales and marketing segments.
