Astra Tech allies with 3Shape on scanning technology

2nd March 2011

Astra Tech is entering into collaboration with 3Shape, a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) specialist, to improve lab-based dental scanning processes.

The global strategic alliance will see the companies work together to develop an interface that provides compatibility between Astra Tech's Atlantis Virtual Abutment Design software and 3Shape's dental scanning technology.

This will allow digital scan information of patient oral geometry to be transferred easily to Atlantis manufacturing facilities for use in creating individualised CAD/CAM implant abutments.

According to Astra Tech, the development will help to make the process of abutment creation cheaper and quicker by eliminating the need to ship physical models.

Peter Selley, chief executive officer of Astra Tech Group, said: "The partnership with 3Shape is a strategic business opportunity which will further strengthen Astra Tech's position within the area of digital implant dentistry."

Currently, Astra Tech's parent company AstraZeneca is conducting a strategic review over the future of the firm, which could potentially result in its sale.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800438350-ADNFCR
