AstraZeneca opens new manufacturing facility in Macclesfield

21st December 2016

AstraZeneca has confirmed the opening of a new UK manufacturing facility for cancer medicines, which becomes its second largest global site.

Located in Macclesfield, the site will be used primarily to produce Zoladex, a drug specified for use in treating the symptoms of prostate cancer in men and breast cancer or endometriosis among women.

Originally announced in November 2013, the 120 million pound investment in the area has secured the future of the site and ensured 3,000 members of staff can retain their roles. AstraZeneca continues to have the second-largest pharmaceutical industry presence in the UK after GlaxoSmithKline.

David Rutley, Macclesfield's Conservative MP, welcomed the move as a vote of confidence in the Macclesfield region, bolstering the Cheshire Science Corridor strategy.

Pascal Soriot, chief executive officer of AstraZeneca, said: "I am delighted to open this new addition to our plant, which will allow us to increase production to meet the needs of patients around the world."

The company will also be relocating its global research and development centre and corporate headquarters to a purpose-built facility on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus next year.
