AstraZeneca opts for Axway Syncrhony supply chain integrity suite

21st August 2007

Axway has announced that AstraZeneca has decided to deploy its Synchrony supply chain integrity suite as part of its product safety data management scheme to protect patients from counterfeit drugs.

The system will facilitate the tracking and tracing of medication, implementing a global strategy and infrastructure across a number of production sites and packaging lines.

Initially, the initiative will cover 12 worldwide locations and 25 packaging lines, aside from the company’s supply chain and US sites.

The Synchrony solution is built on an infrastructure offering product authentication and recall management while also being scalable and flexible to enable speedy adaptation to new partner, business or regulatory requirements.

David Teale, product security director at AstraZeneca, said: “Our core responsibility as an international healthcare business is to achieve high standards, not only for our company, but for the industry as a whole”

He added that AstraZeneca has selected Axway as a partner for its product safety data management initiative as a result of its technical ability breadth of capabilities.

In May 2007, Sanofi-Aventis called for the introduction of an effective policy by the European parliament to deal with the problem of counterfeit medication.

The firm made this argument at the first European parliamentary symposium on the issue.
