AstraZeneca says it is confident for a successful 2009

5th March 2009

AstraZeneca is confident that it will be able to continue to deliver sustainable success in 2009, it has asserted.

This comment came from the company’s chairman Louis Schweitzer after the group released its results for the last financial year.

Sales for the firm increased by three per cent to $31.6 billion (22.3 billion pounds) and operating profits were up four per cent to $9.1 billion.

Mr Schweitzer described the pharmaceutical market as being “arguably less exposed than other sectors to the current global economic, although some impact may result from increased constraints on payers, suppliers and distributors”.

The companies that will achieve the best results over the next 12 months will be able to manage risks and maximise opportunities effectively, the chairman continued to note.

He concluded that he strongly believes AstraZeneca would be able to do this due to its focus on execution, strong leadership and clear strategy to the benefit of patients and shareholders.

The pharmaceutical company is active in over 100 countries worldwide and employs 65,000. Over half of the firm’s staff (51 per cent) work in Europe.
