Availability of psychiatric care ‘varies from region to region’
People with mental health issues are finding that psychiatric care is more easily accessible in some parts of the country than others.
A report from the Royal College of Psychiatrists has found that, for every 100,000 people in the North Central and East London region, there are around 13 consultant psychiatrists providing specialist mental health care. However, in the East of England and Yorkshire and Humber, this falls to five.
In Scotland, there are ten consultant psychiatrists per 100,000 people, which is higher than the average of eight for England and Northern Ireland, and only six in Wales.
Concerns have been raised that this problem is being exacerbated by too few medical students specialising in psychiatry and not enough psychiatrists becoming consultants. In England in the last five years, the number of psychiatry consultants has risen by only 1.7 percent, compared with a 20.2 percent increase in other consultants across the NHS.
Professor Wendy Burn, president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said: "The huge variation in consultant psychiatrists across the country means reality is increasingly falling short of our expectations."
