B Braun’s catheter cutting down injuries
B Braun’s patented safety catheter is cutting down on the number of injuries in hospitals which use such medical instruments, it has been reported.
The device features a self-activating safety clip which eliminates the risk of being accidental scratched by a needle when delivering medication through a cannula, explained Health and Equipment Supplies.
Manchester Royal Infirmary is one of the 70 NHS trusts that have begun using the equipment.
Jimmy Stuart is the clinical director of emergency services at the hospital. He told the website that since the launch of the product, the number of incidents had fallen from around 19 a year to zero.
He commented the device had completely eliminated “cannula-related injuries at no extra cost”.
Graeme Cameron, hospital care business manager at B Braun Medical explained if someone was injured with a contaminated needle, the chance of being infected with Hepatitis B could be as high as one in three.
He added the company’s safety cannula was helping to eliminate the anxiety and fear of such infections.
The B Braun group employs over 27,000 in 140 subsidiaries.
