Baxter announces development partnership for home haemodialysis

8th August 2007

Baxter International has announced a partnership agreement with DEKA Research & Development and HDD for the development of a home haemodialysis machine to develop the firm’s place in the home dialysis therapy marketplace.

As part of this agreement, Baxter will fund related research and development activities at DEKA, while the firm has also acquired an option to purchase the assets of HHD.

In the past, Baxter has partnered with DEKA on the design and development of the company’s HomeChoice automated peritoneal dialysis machine.

Sarah S Prichard, vice-president of global medical and clinical affairs and research for the renal business at Baxter, said: “This [agreement] will give us the opportunity to offer two forms of highly effective at-home dialysis, peritoneal dialysis and home haemodialysis.”

Ms Pritchard added that patients on home dialysis enjoy a boost to their quality of life, with improved flexibility and control of the timing of their treatment in their preferred location.

Baxter also notes that clinical trial results have shown that the more frequent and longer dialysis treatments afforded by home dialysis can result in a number of medical benefits to patients.

In May 2007, the Department of Health reported an improvement in the diagnosis and management of kidney disease on the health service, with an increase in the access to treatment and greater diagnosis of chronic kidney disease.
