Baxter completes purchase of hemostat and sealant products from Mallinckrodt

Baxter is broadening its surgical hemostat and sealant portfolio with the purchase of Recothrom and Preveleak from Mallinckrodt.

Recothrom is the first and only standalone recombinant thrombin, while Preveleak surgical sealant is used in vascular reconstruction.

Baxter stated that both products will complement and widen its existing surgical portfolio of hemostats and sealants.

Wil Boren, president of the company's advanced surgery division, therefore believes this is an exciting development, as it offers surgeons "additional options that address different situations when intraoperative bleeding can occur".

"Our top priority right now is working with customers and distributors to ensure a smooth transition," he added.

Baxter is acquiring Recothrom and Preveleak for an upfront fee of approximately USD 153 million, although it could be required to make contingent payments in the future.
