Baxter Healthcare awards fellowship

18th November 2008

Baxter Healthcare (BH) has pledged to lend its support to a further six clinical fellows over the next three years.

The National Haemophilia Foundation (NHF) works in partnership with the medical group on its clinical fellowships, which are awarded to those interested in the research of conditions such as haemophilia.

At the 60th Annual Meeting of the NHF, BH announced it would increase its contributions to the fellowship program by $5.1 million (3.4 million pounds).

This year’s winners both work in paediatric haematology-oncology.

Romina Sabella-River is medical director and second-year fellow at the University of Texas medical school, as well as medical director of the Anderson Cancer Centre at the university’s health science centre.

This year’s second winner, Mona Shah, is medical director and instructor at the Texas Children’s Cancer Centre Paediatric Haematology-Oncology Service at Baylor College of Medicine.

Peter O’Malley, Baxter BioScience’s vice-president of business alliances, said that advancements in treatments for those who suffer from bleeding and clotting disorders are allowing people to live “more fulfilling lives than ever before”.

The board of directors at Baxter International recently announced an increase of a fifth in its quarterly dividend, with chief executive officer Robert Parkinson saying the result showed the firm’s strong financial position.
