Baxter study shows benefits of haemodialysis therapy Theranova

13th June 2017

Baxter has announced the findings of new clinical studies that demonstrate the numerous benefits offered by its novel haemodialysis therapy Theranova.

Results from two independent studies have shown that expanded haemodialysis (HDx) therapy enabled by the Theranova dialyser effectively removed small and mid-sized toxins at similar rates to haemodiafiltration, another type of dialysis.

In the first study, carried out by the Universite de Poitiers, HDx therapy cleared the four molecules assessed to a similar extent as high-volume HDF treatment, while albumin levels were maintained during treatment and were similar to the HDF treatment period.

Dr Mohamed Belmouaz at the Universite de Poitiers said: "We saw that HDx offers equivalent clearance of middle molecules coupled with the operational simplicity of using standard haemodialysis infrastructure, equipment, protocols and staffing."

The second study also indicated that HDx offers strong removal rates for both small and medium-sized molecules with maintained albumin levels.

HDx therapy extends the range of molecules that can be filtered from the blood during dialysis, resulting in a filtration profile that more closely mimics the natural kidney, and can be performed using conventional haemodialysis equipment.
