Bayer campaign launched to raise awareness of lungworm
Bayer has launched a new campaign to help raise awareness of the risks that lungworm infections can pose to domestic animals.
The Act Against Lungworm campaign calls upon UK vets to encourage pet owners to utilise monthly preventative treatments to limit the risk that lungworm poses to their animals, with campaign materials and leaflets available for practices to display in waiting rooms.
Recent research by Bayer has indicated that 37 percent of vets believe cases of lungworm have increased in their area over the last five years, with a total of 84 separate incidents reported to Bayer since February 2017.
This has resulted in six deaths, with 43 practices noting that the cases they observed were not the first they had experienced. The majority of incidents were seen in the south of the UK, but the spread reached as far north as Paisley in Scotland, showing this is a nationwide problem.
Donna Tomlinson, senior product manager for Bayer's Advocate parasiticide range, said: "We have the case studies to show that lungworm has been reported across the UK, but we rely on the support of vets to help get the message out."
