Bayer HealthCare’s sponsored award presented to winner

29th May 2009

Bayer HealthCare’s sponsored award was presented to the winner yesterday.

After assessing the work of 58 candidates, the judges decided Volker Stollorz from Cologne should take home the European Journalists’ Prize.

He was commended for his article published in the newspaper Die Zeit about a so-called treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

In this piece, Mr Stollorz examined the research, which claimed the classic dyestuff methylene blue could aid the disease. To this day, it remains unclear whether the investigation was a hoax or not.

Dr Regina Oehler was on the panel of judges and explained the journalist managed to recount his own process of discovery, while prompting the reader to think the issues through with him.

“This threefold combination of investigative achievement, narrative attitude and journalistic detachment from the issue won the jury over,” she said.

The award ? which was the seventh of its kind ? was presented by the Association of German Medical Journalists and the prize money was 7,500 euros (6,543 pounds).

Earlier this month, Bayer released its Sustainable Development Report 2008.

Chairman of the board of management Werner Wenning stated the company is “aiming for sustainability in everything we do”.
