Bayer subsidiary acquires Athenix

20th August 2009

Bayer subsidiary Bayer CropScience has announced that it will acquire the company Athenix – a privately-held independent biotechnology firm.

According to Bayer CropScience, the move will allow it to make new technology more readily available, as well as put it in a better position to cater to crop growers across the globe.

In particular, Athenix’s wide-ranging herbicide tolerance and insect control trait development platform will be of benefit to Bayer CropScience, it pointed out.

Athenix’s collection of genes will also serve to strengthen Bayer’s research and development strategies, the firm believes.

Professor Friedrich Berschauer, chairman of the board of management of Bayer CropScience, said: “As part of our long-term strategy for innovation and growth, we intend to strengthen the position of Bayer CropScience in the seeds and traits market.”

Earlier this week, Bayer CropScience announced that it has entered into an agreement with the China National Rice Research Institute for trait development and breeding of the rice crop.
