BCF Technology provides ultrasound system to aid South African chimp research

15th January 2018

BCF Technology has highlighted the contribution its ultrasound technology has made to a research project involving chimpanzees in South Africa.

Dr Kerri-Lee Shannon Dobbie, of the faculty of veterinary science at the University of Pretoria, was provided with an ultrasound system by BCF last year to support a project involving white rhinos.

Subsequently, it has been utilised at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden in Nelspruit, where Dr Dobbie performed clinical ophthalmological examinations on chimps who were undergoing anaesthesia for routine annual health checks.

Results indicated that two of the chimps had unilateral complete cataracts, with the ultrasound machine allowing the team to scan the posterior segment of the eye and identify which animals would be suitable candidates for cataract surgery.

Retinal detachment was diagnosed in one of the chimps, making the animal unsuitable for surgery, while the other chimp was given the go-ahead to undergo surgery this year.

Tim Perks of BCF Technology said: "We want to support vets in our community for the care of all animals, and it is great that this machine has now been used to help two different species so far."
